How are you measuring your success? There are lots of ways to do it as it applies to your own life. It could be that you sustained business and added clients, or you had fewer but better paying clients. You finish a personal project. My success is based on whether I have produced or at least made forward progress on a story. If I haven’t made any progress I have to look at why. What barriers have kept me from achieving set goals.
I think there are a lot of factors that can prevent us from reaching the success we desire. Chase Jarvis published a post recent about crucial principals that need to be followed. They are apropos yet there are some things that need to be addressed when it comes to applying the principals to our lives. The most important item we need to look at is ourselves.
Do we know who we really are? What do we want to accomplish? What is it that makes us different that others? What is more important money or the story? If we can answer these questions then we can apply each of the 13 factors listed in the article.
We can get a pretty good idea of who we are if we list the events and places we have been that shape our thoughts, values, and how we react to given situations. I have for most of my life lived without barriers to what I wanted to do, yet with recent events fences have changed my life radically and not for the better. When you find one that is keeping you from the success you desire you need to find a way to get through it. Build a gate, cut it/knock it down, but get through it. How you do it is up to you. Knowing about a fence which is preventing you from reaching your success is half the battle. Whats the next step? I’ll share mine next week.
