The Rise of Citizen Journalism, Is This the end of Photojournalism?

Is the field of photojournalism dead? Maybe good photojournalism is dead for now as media outlets like CNN turn to citizen journalism, preying on the 60 seconds of fame people would love to have. I have to ask this question, what are the principals of journalism? I doubt the average person doesn’t know. How many people know what the capitol of Kentucky is? Probably not very many. The answer is at the end of the post.  Do we think well get anything beyond sensationalism. I doubt it, the citizen reporter is not going to invest the amount of time it takes to get the full story.

Turning to citizen journalism will follow the line of “you get what you pay for”. I would have to say that hopefully CNN and other outlets will at least keep some fact checkers on board to ensure what we hear is accurate and unbiased. “Oops, did I say that?” might become a very frequent event.

Personally I think this could lead to the downfall of giants like CNN and maybe we’ll see smaller online media outlets popup that are the brainchildren of some of the former CNN journalists. Journalism will live on since there are those like me who desire accurate information in the news.

In an email to staff on Friday, CNN senior vp Jack Womack outlined the reorganization noting that new technology in desk-top editing and user-generated content and social media have made some editing and photojournalism positions redundant.
