In my last article about success, I finished the post touching on the subject of selling yourself. Then today I saw a Facebook post by a friend that asked for an opinion and my comment led me to this subject. I have to apologize because I like to give back-story like someone after they have been out on a drunken party binge, and they vomit all over the place. Sorry for that visual. I hope this is a better one. [singlepic id=25 w=420 h=340 mode=watermark float=]
A long story short, back in the day I attended a 90 day school on how to be a recruiter for the U.S Air Force. At the beginning of each class hour you had to shout ” Boy Am I Enthusiastic”.
The funny thing is when you said it on day 48 and feeling tired of iving impromtu speachesand the such, is that saying it helped the energy level. A Lot! The point of the exercise was to believe in something. To practice that something every day so that it becomes a habit and contributes to a good attitude.
What are you doing today that is a good attitude? DO YOU really believe in the product you are marketing? If you do, do You REALLY BELEIVE in yourself? Be truthful! Could you shout to the world on a street corner what you are selling and what you do? If you can, then you have a great self identity and know who you really are. If you can’t then you have some work to do.
My suggestions on finding out who you are;
- Ask your friends what they think about you –
- No holds barred! Your Friends need to be gut level honest with you.
- Find out what they need think about your character
- Bad habits
- Good Habits
- Likable and unlikeable qualities
- Go on a personal retreat
- Things you can do and take
- Something to write or take notes on, either one will work.
- Take a note book and pen
- Mini tape recorded if you have one
- Food
- Take something that doesn’t take your attention away from what you are doing at the moment
- Keep it simple
- Energy bars
- Trail mix
- Water
- No sodas
- No Coffee after you arrive where you want to be.
- Be Isolated
- Lock yourself up in a hotel room
- Book a few days at a remote cabin
- Take several days in a row and go to a remote hiking location
- Spend the night or even a few nights if you have the gear.
- Who is a major influence on your life?
- Artist
- Photographer
- Author
- Poet
- Film Director
The whole Idea is to have as few distractions so that you can really have a deep conversation with yourself. You really need to get to the answers to the questions above.
Finally, I come back to a question asked earlier; what would it take for you to be able to stand on a street corner and shout out to the passersby and try to sell them your product. Well that may be extreme, but truthfully, what would it take to approach a total stranger and pitch them on what you do? It is the final quest you need to answer. If you can confidently respond to someone that has approached you, you will leave a lasting impression that in turn will bring more business to you.
Ooops forgot one thing, It is important!
Don’t be totally crazy, use some common sense on how freely you talk about what you do.
